Born in 1954, he is an Army General of the Italian Army, now in the reserve. He attended the 156th Course at the Military Academy of Modena and, as a newly commissioned officer, served in the 66th mechanised battalion in Forlì. After the Staff College and the Higher Staff College, he held important command posts, including the 5th "Aosta" Regiment in Messina and the national Contingent in Kosovo.
Among his staff assignments he served both nationally (Army General Staff and Land Operational Forces Command) and internationally: at NATO Headquarters in Brussels as officer responsible for the military aspects of the "Mediterranean Dialogue" and the "PfP funding policy", and — as Brigadier General — at Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk (USA) as "Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff" for Strategic Concepts, Policy and interoperability of NATO forces.
In 2007, on returning from the United States, he joined the newly established External Intelligence and Security Agency (AISE) as Head of the Analysis Department. Within AISE he also served as Chief of Staff and directed operational departments in the field of Human Intelligence. From October 2007 to March 2010 he was a member of the Strategic Counter-Terrorism Analysis Committee (CASA).
He holds degrees in Strategic Sciences (University of Turin) and Political Science (University of Trieste), a second-level Master in Strategic Sciences and a first-level Master in Geopolitics. He is a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great of the Holy See, and holds numerous national and foreign honours, including the NATO Meritorious Service Medal. He is President of the National Register of Intelligence Analysts.
